When choosing an aesthetic treatment, it all starts with a consultation…

A good med spa will always offer a thorough consultation before any treatment.

Here is a guide on what to expect during your consultation and red flags to help you avoid being sold the wrong treatment or being wrapped into a high-pressure sales environment.

First, you should consult with the person who performs the treatments.  A qualified medical provider should lead with integrity and always have your safety at the forefront of their recommendations.  You should feel comfortable enough to ask any and all questions without feeling rushed or judged in any way.

During the consultation, expect to be asked a LOT of questions.  It’s crucial that your provider understands your health history, your long- and short-term aesthetic goals, any previous treatments you’ve had, and the skin care products you are using at home.  This ensures their recommendations align with your expectations and that results are delivered with the utmost regard for safety.

Next, they will clearly explain your treatment options.  They will review any pre-treatment instructions, what to expect during treatment, how many treatments you will need to achieve the desired result, how and when to schedule treatments, and so much more.  With a thorough consultation, you should know the risks, rewards, possible side effects (such as bruising or swelling), aftercare instructions to help you heal properly, and which skincare products to use to maximize your results.  This may seem like a lot, but knowledge is power.  This is your face, your body, your time, and your money.

Lastly, based on your provider's recommendations, we'll develop a customized treatment plan for you, and they will review pricing.  A good provider will be mindful of your budget,  guide you to the most effective treatments within it, and create a plan to achieve long-term results.  It can feel intimidating to jump into the deep end of the aesthetic waters, so use your consultation as a guide, a toe in the aesthetic water, if you will.  You can start with as little or as much as you choose.

Some medspas have a Practice Coordinator review pricing and package savings with you.  It’s important to note - you should ALWAYS speak to the Treatment Provider FIRST.  A Practice Coordinator is solely there to go over pricing and assist you with scheduling.  While a practice coordinator is extremely knowledgeable about aesthetic treatments, they aren’t the person actually operating the equipment or injecting the toxin.

If you feel pressured to book or are upsold aggressively, that’s a warning sign. You should feel informed, heard, safe, and excited!

While price matters, the cheapest option is rarely the best when it comes to aesthetics.  Remember, this is your face, your body, your time, and your money.  If you don’t get the results you’re after, no matter how much you saved, you’ll still feel like it was money wasted.  A price that seems too low is an indicator of inexperienced providers, diluted or counterfeit products, and a practice that likely runs on volume rather than quality. Instead, look for fair, transparent pricing that reflects expertise, quality, safety, and integrity.

An excellent outcome starts with a thorough consultation. Knowing what a comprehensive consultation looks like puts you on the path to long-lasting, safe, natural-looking aesthetic results.
